Getting Started with Baseline Driver Training

Follow this step-by-step guide to download the software, prepare your data, and start analysing your braking and throttle performance.

Download

Get started by downloading Baseline Driver Training from the app.

Using Your Own Data

Download the example file to see the expected format:

Download Data Import Example File

CSV File Format

The CSV file should contain data that is semicolon separated — this is the standard for Excel.

Decimal numbers should be in the format number,decimal (e.g. 2,3) or number.decimal (e.g. 2.1).

This is how Excel formats automatically, depending on your language settings. Baseline Driver Training accepts both formats.

Data Points

Each data point (each row) consists of:

Time
Speed
Brake Pressure
Throttle

Import Procedure

To import data from an arbitrary data source, follow these steps:

1

Create a New Tab

Open your spreadsheet application and create a new tab to work in.

2

Import Your CSV File

Use Data → Import CSV to import your CSV file into the new tab.

Make sure numbers are imported as numbers, not text. Check that number formats are standard numbers — not dates, percentages, or scientific notation. Decimal numbers should be e.g. 3,4 or 3.4.
3

Clean Up Columns

Delete all unneeded columns, keeping only the data you need for analysis.

4

Duplicate the Import Data Tab

Duplicate the "Import Data" tab to create a working copy.

5

Arrange Your Data

Copy and paste the Time, Speed, Brake Pressure, and Throttle columns into the copy of the Import Data tab you just made.

If available, you can also copy the GPS columns for additional location data.
6

Verify the Graph

Ensure the graph looks reasonable — the data should show realistic braking and throttle patterns.

7

Save Your Work

Save the Excel sheet first, then save the tab as a CSV file:

  1. Switch to the tab containing your data (remember the labels)
  2. Go to Save As
  3. Pick CSV as the file format
  4. Choose a filename and save
This only saves the content of that one tab. The resulting CSV should be loadable by Baseline Driver Training.

Playback Notes

We generally assume that an interesting dataset represents a brake zone: meaning it starts with throttle at 100% and brake at 0. We add one second of throttle = 100% and brake = 0 before the set when playing back.

This is not required. You can add a full run-through if you like, with several brake zones.
