You think you're braking smoothly. You think you're applying throttle progressively. But are you? Telemetry doesn't lie.
Most sim racers look at telemetry and see squiggly lines. Fast drivers look at telemetry and see exactly where they're losing time—and more importantly, why.
What to Look For: Brake Trace
Your brake trace tells the story of your corner entry. Here's what to analyze:
1. Initial Brake Application
- Good: Sharp spike to maximum pressure, then smooth hold
- Bad: Gradual ramp-up to max pressure (you're being too gentle)
- Bad: Spike above 100% then drop (you're locking up, then correcting)
2. Brake Release
- Good: Smooth, progressive curve from max to zero
- Bad: Jagged, stepped release (inconsistent muscle control)
- Bad: Sudden drop to zero (you're releasing too quickly)
Pro Tip:
Compare your brake trace to a faster driver's. Don't look at where they brake—look at how they release. That's where the real speed is hidden.
What to Look For: Throttle Trace
Your throttle trace reveals your corner exit technique:
1. Initial Throttle Application
- Good: Smooth ramp from 0% to full throttle
- Bad: Sudden jump to 50%+ (you're being too aggressive)
- Bad: Multiple small lifts (you're correcting for wheelspin)
2. Throttle Maintenance
- Good: Steady 100% once you're straight
- Bad: Oscillating between 95-100% (lack of precision)
- Bad: Never reaching 100% (you're leaving time on the table)
The Overlap: Brake and Throttle Together
Now overlay your brake and throttle traces. This reveals your transition technique:
- Good: Smooth crossover—brake decreases as throttle increases
- Bad: Gap between brake release and throttle application (you're coasting)
- Bad: Both pedals pressed simultaneously (you're fighting the car)
Common Telemetry Patterns and Fixes
Pattern: Jagged Brake Release
What it means: Your leg muscles aren't smooth enough to modulate brake pressure precisely.
Fix: Isolated brake modulation training. Drill smooth releases until they're automatic.
Pattern: Aggressive Throttle Application
What it means: You're applying throttle too quickly, causing wheelspin and instability.
Fix: Practice progressive throttle application. Focus on the 0-50% range.
Pattern: Coasting Between Brake and Throttle
What it means: You're not confident in your transition timing.
Fix: Work on overlapping brake release with throttle application. The transition should be seamless.
Using Telemetry to Guide Training
Telemetry shows you what to fix. Isolated training is how you fix it. Here's the workflow:
- Analyze your telemetry - Identify the specific input pattern that's costing you time
